I just taught an after-school Music Together class with kids ranging from 1-7 years old, alongside their moms, babysitters, and nannies, and there was so much going on in the room! Some children were winding down after a full day of school, others were bursting with energy, and all were deeply engaged. Together, we built social skills, practiced listening and echoing in a playful way, expressed emotions, and created a joyful musical repertoire. By the end, we had songs and rhythms that families could carry into their evenings–at home, in the park, or during bedtime routines.
It struck me again how much richness lives inside these classes. They are more than just “dance” or “music time”: they are whole-child, whole-family, and whole-community experiences.
A Whole-Child Approach
Music in Tam Tam classes works on many levels at once. Children are singing, moving, and playing — but also learning to regulate emotions, listen carefully, and engage with others. While movement is a big part of what we do, the addition of rhythm, melody, and playful improvisation creates a more complete space for expression than movement alone.
Family-Centered Fun
In our classes, parents and caregivers don’t just watch from the sidelines. They sing, clap, dance, and model musical joy. Children thrive when their favorite grownups are active participants, and families leave class with shared experiences that strengthen bonds and carry into daily life.
Inclusivity for All Ages and Abilities
One of the joys of Tam Tam’s mixed-age format is seeing babies watch wide-eyed as older kids take the lead, or toddlers light up as they imitate the “big kids.” Everyone has a place, regardless of stage or ability, and no one feels left behind. Music’s accessibility makes it a universal activity for children from birth through preschool and beyond.
Lasting Impact Beyond the Studio
Unlike activities that stay inside the classroom or studio, music comes with you. A favorite song can smooth the transition into bedtime, bring calm during car rides, or spark joy at the playground. Over time, children gain not only musical ability (like keeping a steady beat or singing in tune) but also skills that support literacy, math, focus, and social connection.
A Multi-Sensory Experience
Tam Tam classes engage voice, body, ears, eyes, touch, as well as vestibular and proprioceptive senses. Children don’t just move to music; they explore instruments, experiment with rhythm, and respond to the whole group’s energy. This multi-sensory immersion is what makes the experience so rich and developmentally powerful.
Community Focus
Every week, families return to sing together, and over time, a sense of belonging grows. It’s not about a performance: it’s about collaboration, joy, and the connections that ripple out into home and neighborhood life. Parents often tell us that their friendships (and their children’s!) started right here on the music rug.
The Joy of Music
At the heart of it all is joy. Music is universal and timeless: songs can be carried in hearts, voices, and hands long after class ends. Whether it’s a toddler proudly singing at the dinner table or a baby bouncing in rhythm on a caregiver’s lap, these little musical victories are deeply meaningful, confidence-boosting, and endlessly portable.
Takeaway
Hands-on, whole-body music classes give children and families something both joyful and deeply developmental: a musical foundation, an outlet for self-expression, and a community that sings and grows together.
By making music a shared family activity–not just a performance or kids activity–we nurture skills that last a lifetime and create memories that enrich everyday life.
